US-Iran standoff: Doha talks continue under threat of force

Iranian negotiators spent a third day in Doha with Qatari mediators as efforts continued to prevent a wider confrontation with the United States and Israel. The talks were described as part of a fragile diplomatic track, even as Washington and Tehran exchanged repeated threats and warnings. The US State Department said the “hand of negotiation has been extended,” while Iranian officials said they still preferred diplomacy but were ready to respond if attacked.

The rhetoric remained sharp. US President Donald Trump said Washington may need to take care of “one or two sites” in Iran and said talks were going fine, though he also called Tehran “not very reliable.” Iranian officials warned that any renewed war could last longer than the previous round of fighting, and one report said Iran had no intention of entering peace talks with the US as tensions rose.

Hormuz and Gulf shipping: tanker blasts and blockade fears

The Strait of Hormuz was again at the center of the crisis after reports that two tankers exploded after hitting mines, and that a vessel was struck by an unknown projectile. Iran’s IRGC Navy said the tankers had exploded after striking mines while traveling through an unauthorized route, while UK Maritime Trade Operations reported a separate incident involving a merchant vessel. The strait remains a critical maritime chokepoint, and the incidents intensified concern over shipping security.

Iran said the strait could be reopened within two days if the United States accepts a set of conditions, including recognition of a new shipping route and sanctions relief. Qatar was involved in mediation, and several reports said Gulf states were braced for a negative outcome. Qatar and Saudi Arabia both condemned attacks on tankers as threats to global energy security, while US Central Command said it had redirected 144 commercial vessels under its blockade enforcement.

Ukraine: Russian strikes hit energy grid and refineries

Russian strikes again targeted Ukraine’s energy system, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and damaging facilities in several regions. Reports said attacks hit Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr and Khmelnytskyi, while other coverage said facilities in at least four regions were struck as winter approaches. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attacks left thousands of households without electricity and injured workers from the country’s major private energy company.

Ukraine also continued its own long-range strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. A refinery in Kstovo was reported ablaze after a drone strike, and another industrial facility in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region was hit. Separate reports said Ukraine had resumed attacks on Russian oil refineries despite pressure from Washington, underscoring the continuing energy war on both sides of the front.

Gaza and the West Bank: more deaths and displacement

Israeli strikes in Gaza killed at least eight or nine Palestinians in separate reports, including a child and five police officers in Khan Younis, with additional deaths reported in Gaza City. The reports said medics and the Hamas-run interior ministry confirmed the casualties, while one account said Israeli military comment was not included. The violence added to the continuing toll in the enclave.

Elsewhere, the occupied West Bank remained under pressure. Reports said Israel’s siege on Hebron had entered its tenth day, with nearly 5,000 people displaced, and another article said Israeli authorities had issued more than 9,500 demolition or stop-work notices against Palestinian structures since 2015. One report also described settlers attacking olive harvesters near al-Mughayyir, showing how the conflict continued to affect civilian life beyond Gaza.

Cybercrime: Binance absorbs record $6.3 billion hack

Binance said it had replaced more than 90% of the $6.3 billion stolen in a record cyberattack and expected withdrawals to resume after the breach. The exchange said it had covered about $6 billion using corporate reserves and emergency funds, and later said withdrawals were stabilizing. The FBI attributed the attack to North Korean hackers linked to TraderTraitor, and several reports described it as the largest cryptocurrency heist in history.

The incident shook the wider crypto market and highlighted the scale of state-linked cyber theft. Reports said the exchange’s customers withdrew billions after operations resumed, while analysts warned that the theft underscored continuing vulnerabilities at major digital asset platforms.

Other diplomacy: Black Sea, Turkey and Western Sahara

Beyond the Middle East, diplomacy around the Ukraine war continued to move in several directions. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said international interest was growing in a limited Black Sea ceasefire to keep energy and grain shipments moving, while Turkey discussed the possibility of hosting new Ukraine-Russia-US peace talks. A rare truce in the Kherson region was also due to expire after allowing an evacuation from Russian-occupied Oleshky.

Elsewhere, the UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara ended after the Security Council failed to renew its mandate, marking a major shift in the long-running dispute. In the eastern Mediterranean, Greece took the Turkish-Libyan memorandum case to the UN Security Council, while a French survey vessel waited in Crete after NAVTEX issuance.
